چکیده
Ocean reanalysis products are used to examine salinity variability and its relationships with temperature in the western equatorial Pacific during 1950–2018. An ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method is adopted separate signals at different time scales; a focus placed on interdecadal component this study. Pronounced variations seen region, which exhibits persistent transitional phases association temperature. A surface freshening accompanied by warming 1980s 1990s, but saltening cooling 2000s, shifts occurring around late 1970s, 2016–2018, respectively. Determined anomaly signs of salinity, their combined effects can be density-compensated or density-uncompensated, correspondingly acting produce density that suppressed enhanced, The phase- depth-dependent. In subsurface layers 200 m, where anomalies tend nearly same sign evolution, mostly density-compensated. situation more complicated layer, sea (SSS) (SST) exhibit evolution. SST SSS opposite being density-uncompensated; they periods corresponding changes undergo relationships. Examples given for among these fields phase differences transitions 1990s; cause delay transition anomalies. Furthermore, relative contributions variabilities stratification quantified. consequences also discussed terms local SST.

Radiocarbon variability in the western equatorial Pacific inferred from a highresolution coral record from Nauru Island
We have generated a high resolution coral A14C record spanning the last 50 years to document the seasonal and interannual redistribution of surface waters in the western tropical Pacific. Prebomb (1947-1956) A14C values average -63%0 and have a total range of 30%0. Values begin to increase in 1957, reaching a maximum of 137%o in mid-1983. Large interannual variability of up to 80%0 closely foll...
متن کاملDefining the climatic signal in stream salinity trends using the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation and its rate of change
The impact of landuse on stream salinity is currently difficult to separate from the effect of climate, as the decadal scale climatic cycles in groundwater and stream hydrology have similar wavelengths to the landuse pattern. These hydrological cycles determine the stream salinity through accumulation or release of salt in the landscape. Widespread patterns apparent in stream salinity are discu...
متن کاملPacific Interdecadal Climate Variability: Linkages between the Tropics and the North Pacific during Boreal Winter since 1900
This study examines the tropical linkages to interdecadal climate fluctuations over the North Pacific during boreal winter through a comprehensive and physically based analysis of a wide variety of observational datasets spanning the twentieth century. Simple difference maps between epochs of high sea level pressure over the North Pacific (1900–24 and 1947–76) and epochs of low pressure (1925–4...
متن کاملDistribution of Virus-Infected Bacteria in the Western Equatorial Pacific
Viruses are generally considered an important agent of bacterial loss in diverse marine environments. However, the impact of viruses on bacteria is unknown in the western equatorial Pacific, where surface waters are warm and phytoplankton biomass is low (i.e., oligotrophic). Further, little is known about their importance in the mesopelagial, where bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates are...
